March 1, 2006 Research Institute for Solid State Physics and Optics Strong Griffiths singularities in random systems and their relation to extreme value statistics We consider interacting many particle systems with quenched disorder having strong Griffiths singularities, which are characterized by the dynamical exponent, "z", such as random quantum systems and exclusion processes. In several d=1 and d=2 dimensional problems we have calculated the inverse time-scales, 1/tau, in finite samples of linear size, L, either exactly or numerically. In all cases, having a discrete symmetry, the distribution function, P(1/tau,L), is found to depend on the variable, u=L^{z/d}/tau, and to be universal given by the limit distribution of extremes of independent and identically distributed random numbers. This finding is explained in the framework of a strong disorder renormalization group approach [2] when, after fast degrees of freedom are decimated out the system is transformed into a set of non-interacting localized excitations. The Fréchet distribution of P(1/tau,L) is expected to hold for all random systems having a strong disorder fixed point, in which the Griffiths singularities are dominated by disorder fluctuations.

March 22, 2006 Condensed Matter Theory Group, Imperial College, UK Strongly anisotropic scaling in a surface growth model Using field theoretic renormalisation, a growth process with an obliquely incident influx of atoms is examined to one loop. The model is given by a Langevin equation with anisotropic non-linearity, which causes the harmonic part as well as the non-linearity itself to renormalise anisotropically. As a result, four different critical regimes are to be considered, depending on which of the temperature-like, anisotropic couplings "tau_perp" and "tau_parallel" vanishes. This model has been analysed by Marsili and co-workers [1] in a one loop Wilson renormalisation group study. Instead of only one, we consider all critical regimes of the model. Apart from the trivial regime, where "tau" is finite in both directions and the problem reduces to an Edwards-Wilkinson [2] equation, there are three non-trivial cases, two of which display a second order phase transition. The resulting roughness exponents are strongly anisotropic, i.e. the scaling exponents depend on the direction considered. Great care is needed for the comparison to experimental results: The anisotropy leads to rather unexpected scaling, depending on whether the surface is characterised in real or in Fourier space, and which direction is chosen.

2006. május 17. ELTE, Atomfizikai Tanszék Kvantum feketelyukak termodinamikája A kvantum feketelyukak energia spektrumában levő átmenetek fontosak a feketelyukak keresésében és mivel e módusok függenek a téridő - pl. húr elméletekben létező feketelyukak körüli terek - paramétereitől, lehetőség nyílik e paraméterek meghatározására. áttekintjük a feketelyuk entrópia mikroszkopikus interpretációját húr, brane, szuperszimmetrikus és szupergravitáció elméletekben, a kanonikus kvantum gravitációt és a Hawking sugárzást. October 4, 2006 Izabella Benczik Physics Department, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia Voter model on an adaptive disordered network We consider the dynamics of the voter model on a quenched disordered network. The network on which the voter dynamics takes place is built in an adaptive manner: at each time step the nodes associated to a given agent may be connected with a probability p to nodes sharing the same opinion and with probability 1-p to nodes in a different state. In this manner, the structure of the network is quenched, as it is correlated and evolves with the dynamics of the agents. We obtain the final state of the sytem for arbitrary initial condition. On long time scales the network reaches one of its absorbing states (completely ordered), whereas on intermediate time scales a "neutral" state (with zero magnetization) or an active state (with finite magnetization) can persist for long times. |
